Earth Day 2022
With Earth Day 2022 upon us there’s never been a better time for the earth to be given its own day.
What is Earth day?
Earth Day began in 1970 to mark the birth of the modern environmental movement and has been bringing together businesses, non-profits and individuals on the 22nd April every year.
Here at Zixtel we see first hand that electronic waste continues to be one of the fastest growing waste streams on the planet. The Earth Day 2022 theme is Invest in Our Planet and boy did we choose to invest. This theme focuses on changing the business climate, the political climate, and how we take action on climate.
The rapid rate of climate change and the ever-growing amount of WEEE waste added to landfill across the globe is testament to the fact that positive changes need to be made.
Why E-waste?
The continuing pressure to continually upgrade technology means there’s no such thing as “a device for life” and because of this it is estimated that by 2030 we’ll produce 74 million tonnes of e-waste every single year and, according to recent studies, the UK is on course to becoming the biggest contributor to levels of e-waste in Europe over the next three years.
Of the e-waste generated, it is estimated that 40 per cent is illegally exported to other countries to be dumped, where contaminants from the discarded devices can enter the water and food supplies of local communities causing illness and even fatalities.
Material focus studies suggests un-recycled household electricals cost the UK over £370m a year in lost materials like gold, copper, aluminium, and steel.
What are Zixtel doing?
Over the last three years Zixtel have worked tirelessly on innovative and exciting ways to responsibly recycle E-waste and WEEE in our Wetherby, Leeds warehouse. With a brand new, fully operational, recycling plant on site, we can confidently recycle equipment that is end of life or cannot be successfully refurbished by our technical team.
Our mission is to make reuse and recycling of E-waste easy. Helping businesses and individuals safely make a positive change for the environment, clear out clutter, destroy their data, and make money from their redundant E-waste. It’s a win win.
We also buy, sell and refurbish all generations of IT hardware meaning when you are ready for an upgrade, we can provide you with a complete circular service.
How can you get involved?
As a business that both refurbishes and recycles IT equipment, we are proud to be a part of the movement. It couldn’t be easier for you to get involved too. Read more about how to recycle your redundant IT equipment here.
